uPhongolo Municipality Mayor Her Worship Cllr Velephi Sikhosana and Councillors today performed a sod-turning ceremony at Phondwane Area, Pongola, where the sports field will be constructed.

Members of the Ward 8 community were invited to attend this meeting as part of the introduction of the contractor. At the event, Mayor Sikhosana took the platform to handover uMjuntshi Esporweni Construction, as mandated by Supply Chain Management processes to construct the over R10 million sports field. “The sport field will help on fighting against social ills faced by today's youth. It will also improve the sporting activities within the area and promote healthy living culture” Said the Mayor Sikhosana. She also asked the community not vandalise this structure and to ensure that it is well managed.

According to the municipality, the facility is set to accommodate a soccer field, change rooms, a combo court and fencing. The project will also benefit the local community over 25 job opportunities during the construction. The construction of the Sport filed is estimated to be 8 months.
